Russian politics to be exact. My uncle had taught me the art of playing them, as if I needed a lesson in brutality.

That’s all that those who still believed in the old ways were capable of. Viktor Romanoff was a legend inside Russia, an oligarch who controlled a huge regime in Moscow. He was also a true savage, incapable of showing mercy. He was considered a friend of my uncle’s, the two growing up together, alongside my father. The three had been inseparable for years, running the streets at ten years old similar to the way both Vladimir and Viktor ran their operations now.

At least so I’d been told.

We’d done business once years before, the occurrence leaving me with a foul taste in my mouth. I’d warned my uncle that Viktor would attempt to force an alliance, in doing so making the combined Bratva the most powerful syndicate in the world. That didn’t seem disconcerting to Vladimir in the least. He’d puffed up, giving it some consideration. Then I’d managed to talk him out of it.

It was my belief that Viktor held that against me, which means he couldn’t be trusted.

I found it interesting that Viktor had initiated a large purchase, risky doing so in America given the number of warrants issued by several countries for his arrest. Then I’d learned he’d burned several sources, including the one I’d been using for the last couple of years. The pressure from Vladimir to make this happen didn’t sit well with me on any level.

Even more curious, the merciless oligarch had decided to handle the monetary transaction himself. The man never left his comfortable estate where he was surrounded by a harem of women. My gut told me he had a hidden agenda. I’d need to determine what that was. He’d been delayed in getting here, his weak reason as to why striking a nerve. He needed to be watched at all times.

I grabbed my jacket, sliding into it. This was the final meeting prior to the arrival of the shipment. I’d had the manifest altered, a small ship coming in with movie equipment. If the Feds were onto me, they’d spent time searching the cargo ship finding nothing. The shipment of party favors was arriving much later, registered in another dummy corporation no one knew about. The bait and switch wasn’t my usual method of operation, but I’d felt the decision was prudent.

“Gentlemen. Nothing can go wrong tonight. If you see any sign of Colombian soldiers for the bogus shipment, allow the Feds to do their jobs,” I told them.

“And the party favors?” Ricardo asked.

“When they arrive, make certain the sharks are fed.”

“Yes, sir,” a few of them said before heading to the elevator, Ricardo remaining.

I adjusted my cuffs then moved to the small safe. Images of Savannah’s face entered my mind. Rosy lips, soft as clouds. Deep green eyes that magnetized every male when she walked into a room. She was mine, whether or not she was aware. I grabbed my Glock, popping in a magazine.
